#12 - Top 12 Favorite Comic Book Short Stories

Over at Classic Comics at Comic Book Resources (where I serve as humble moderator), we're discussing our favorite self contained short stories (between 2 and 12 pages). I thought I would re-post my selections here. I encourage everyone to check out the threads and if you aren't already a member - register and join the discussion. The Little Town of Resistance - Blackhawk #271 (July, 1984)
Mark Evanier & Joe Staton - 6 pages

As much as I adore the team of Mark Evanier and Dan Spiegle on the lead stories in this series, I really get a kick out of the shorter Blackhawk Detached Service Diary stories. My personal favourite is this 6-pager about a stubbornly brave French village that, ultimately, cannot quite live to its name. It's a nice little philosophical piece by Evanier, with lovely and understated artwork by Joe Staton. In fact, I like it so much that I tracked down the final page which is framed and hanging on a wall in my house.

I don't own that particular issue, but I love that last run (#251 to 273) of the Bronze Age Blackhawk with Mark Evanier on scripts and guest great artists galore on art. I am still missing a few of the last issues of the run (#271 being one of them) as I discovered them after they were originally published. It was a very cool run and fun read and depending on issues you might get art by Chaykin, Newton, Severin, Toth, Wildey. But the main artist on that run was underrated Dan Spiegle. They were a lot of back-up stories focussing on individual Blackhawks which is a good thing if you like the short story format.

This run is an undiscovered Bronze Age gem.
